“The first in a trilogy, there are echoes of Lord of the Rings, but this is so much easier to read. Tallow is a layered character, as is the book. Throughout this first volume, there are many surprises, twists and turns to keep the reader hooked.
There are also rich details with the faux Renaissance Venetian background, and candle-making trade. There is depth in the characters, as we learn aspects of them along the way. As with real life, there are shades of grey within many characters, as we try to work out whose side they are on. There are also consequences as Tallow acts impetuously, and then sees unintended results. There are mysteries and politics, evil and love. The hidden agendas that surface are timed to intrigue rather than confuse. Occasionally, the chapters may switch to first person as we learn Tallow’s thoughts on an event. While distracting at first due to some repetition, it does allow the reader more knowledge of the various angles. Aimed at young adults, the mature readers from 12 onwards will probably inhale this book and be clamouring for the next volume. A treat in time for the long summer holidays! “
